What is Cellulite?

Cellulite: Get It Gone!

Cellulite is a very common, harmless skin condition that causes lumpy, dimpled flesh on the thighs, hips, buttocks and abdomen. There is a hormonal component as it is most prevalent in women and often becomes more pronounced following pregnancy.

While little is known about the actual causes of cellulite, it involves fibrous connective cords that tether the skin to the underlying muscle, with the fat lying between. As fat cells accumulate, they push up against the skin, while the long, tough cords pull down. This creates an uneven surface or dimpling.

For most of us, more important than the cause of the cellulite is the treatment.  There are many cellulite creams on the market which can make cellulite appear temporarily better.  The creams that contain caffeine (tightens skin and increases blood glow) and retinol (increases collagen and improves texture) work best but none of the creams do anything to treat the underlying cause.

To get rid of cellulite you need to disrupt the fibrous bands that cause it. The clinicians at Bala Better Health are experts in this procedure, called subcision.  During subcision a surgical instrument is introduced and mechanically severs the fibers which releases the dimpling and the cellulite.
